Overview

In third grade, students learn about Michigan's history. The State of Michigan has created a website just for kids to learn more about Michigan! Students can learn about Michigan's state symbols, the environment, food, government and laws, and much more. 

Students will:

  • Be able to use the State of Michigan's website for information on Michigan.
  • Be able to learn more about Michigan history, people and wildlife. 

To prepare for this lesson:

  • Michigan.gov has a website designed for students to learn more about Michigan. 
  • The Getting To Know Michigan .pdf would be very helpful for the students. It is a coloring book with amazing facts about Michigan. 
  • There are eight stories for the students to read for Michigan folklore

Note:  

  • Bookmark the websites most relevant for your students.
  • If you would like your students to learn fun facts about Michigan, try out Michigan Learning Games. They have put together a page with games to learn more about Michigan. There are word searches, matching, paragraph writing practice, and printables. 
  1. There are many good websites and resources compiled by the State of Michigan for teachers and students. There are activities and games, environment facts, historical facts, state symbols, and facts. 
  2. Assign a report or presentation to the students. 
  3. Bookmark the websites that the students will use or take them directly to Michigan Kids to access the websites and resources. 
  4. Print out the coloring book for the students to use or have them read the PDF and print only the pages they need and want to color for use in their report/presentation. 

Additional Resource: Have the students use the Michigan Learning Games website during their free time to learn more about Michigan.
